Dos and don'ts after Ganpati Sthapana at home

One of the most beloved Gods in Hindu religion, Ganesha is all set to visit us during the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated from September 7 to September 17, 2024.
For the unversed, Lord Ganesh is the elephant-headed Hindu god of wisdom, prosperity, and good luck. Ganesh Chaturthi– which is also called Vinayaka Chaturthi– marks the birth of Ganesh ji and it generally falls in Bhadrapada, as per the Hindu calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, it generally falls in August or September.
Ganesh ji is Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati’s son. The story of his birth goes like this, as per Hindu mythology: Once Goddess Parvati created the form of a boy from sandalwood paste and breathed life into him. This was named Ganesha, and he was given the task of guarding the house while his mother, Parvati, bathed. During this time, Lord Shiva came back home and was surprised to see a boy guarding his house. Being an obedient child, Lord Ganesh didn’t allow even Shiva to enter the house and this led to a battle between them wherein Lord Shiva severed Ganesha’s head. Later when Parvati came to know about this, she mourned the death of the boy and was inconsolable. And so to please her, Lord Shiva replaced the head of the boy with that of an elephant’s and thus brought him back to life with his divine powers.

Every year, Lord Ganesha visits his devotees for 10-days on Earth during Ganesh Chaturthi. And so, this festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour by his devotees, mainly in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is not only a religious festival but also a community festival, which brings people from all walks of life together. On the first day of the festival, people bring idols of Lord Ganesha to their home or community pandals and worship him during the next 10 days. The last day, which is the Anant Chaturdashi, Ganesha’s idol is taken out on a grand procession and later immersed in a water body– this act is called Ganesh Visarjan. In the Hindu religion, this symbolises the idea of creation and dissolution– that nothing is permanent in life, except faith and devotion to God.
If you plan to bring Ganesha home this Ganesh Chaturthi, here we list some important dos and don’ts one should follow after Ganpati Sthapana at home:
1. People keep Ganesh idols at home for 3, 5 or all 10 days of Ganesh Chaturthi. During this time, when Lord Ganesha is at your home, treat him just like a guest and cater to him. Offer him food, water, and flowers every day. In Indian culture, guests are considered to be a form of God– Atithi Devo Bhava.
2. Devotees should have a Sattvik diet during the time when Lord Ganesha is present in their home. Irrespective of whether you are fasting or not during Ganesh Chaturthi, consumption of alcohol or non-vegetarian foods is prohibited. It is also advised to avoid onion, garlic, and other tamasic foods during this time.
3. Have a pleasant environment at home and do not fight with anyone. Considering that Lord Ganesha is a guest at your home, one should keep a positive environment at home and be kind to everyone.
